Mediapapa Feature
Unused media is any file in the WordPress Media Library that is not referenced anywhere on the site — not in any post, page, custom field, widget, nav menu or theme option. It is distinct from unattached media, which only means the file has no parent post.
How Mediapapa detects unused media
Mediapapa’s usage index scans every context where file references can appear: post content, block attributes, postmeta, ACF fields, Elementor widget data, widget areas, nav menus and the WordPress options table. A file with zero references across all of those contexts is flagged as unused.
This is a more thorough definition than the native WordPress “Unattached” filter, which only checks whether the file has a parent post. Many files filtered as “unattached” by WordPress are still actively used via content references. Mediapapa’s unused detection does not produce the same false positives.
Unused media and library governance
Unused media accumulates over time on any active WordPress site. Images from deleted blog posts, replaced hero images, discontinued product photos, test uploads — all remain in the library unless actively removed. On a five-year-old site, 30–40% of media files being unused is not uncommon.
Before deleting anything flagged as unused, run a fresh scan to confirm the index is current. Mediapapa’s Deletion Warnings provide a second check at the point of deletion.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to delete all files Mediapapa flags as unused?
Generally yes, but always verify the scan is current before bulk deletion. Run a fresh scan, review the list, and check whether any files are used in contexts the index might not cover (custom plugin tables, third-party integrations). Start with a small batch on a staging copy if you are uncertain.
What is the difference between unused and unattached?
Unattached means the file has no parent post in WordPress — it was uploaded directly to the library, not from within a post editor. Unused means the file is not referenced anywhere in content. The two statuses are independent. An unattached file can be heavily used; an attached file can be completely unused.
